Wine & Spirits 93 points

From estate parcels in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, all 2010 fruit, this is a lively young blend with purity and clarity of expression. As it opens in the glass, it reveals delicate scents of apple blossoms, zesty pear-skin greenness and a pale integration of mineral acidity that makes it refreshing and delicious. The dosage is a little aggressive, but it’s there to mellow the fierceness of the acidity, the wine likely best four or five years from release.

"A complex, strikingly elegant and airy nose features notes of baked broad, yeast, pear, green apple and lovely spice notes. The refined character continues onto the absolutely delicious flavors that possess a moderately exuberant mousse before terminating in a dry, crisp and slightly austere finish that is clean, refreshing and persistent. This knockout is drinking perfectly now and is highly recommended." (09/12)

Food pairing: The bubbly texture is pleasant with Mediterranean food, especially eggplant and chickpea dishes.

The Domain: In 1889 Pierre Moncuit and his wife, Odile Moncuit-Delos, established the house of Champagne Pierre Moncuit. Since 1977, Nicole Moncuit has managed the vineyards and made the wine, while her brother Yves has managed the sales. More recently, Nicole’s daughter Valérie has been actively assisting in the cellar.

Mesnil lies smack in the middle of the Côte des Blancs and is its most celebrated village, in no small part because of the vintages of Salon Champagne and the single-vineyard Clos du Mesnil, owned, of course, by Krug. The wines of Mesnil are known above all for steely elegance and minerality, and those from chez Pierre Moncuit—which has some of the oldest vines along the entire Côte—superbly reflect these qualities.

100% Chardonnay from our Grand cru terroir. Dosage of about 6 grams. The vintages are a reflection of our fabulous terroir. They always have at least 8 years of ageing in the cellar when we offer them. The 2006 vintage is iodized and saline.
