Alcohol: 13.5%
Grape(s): Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia, and Roscetto (aka Trebbiano Giallo)
Localization: Lazio, Italy
Tasting Notes: The Falesco isn’t overly aromatic, as is typical, but it isn’t simple. Zesty lemon and crunchy green apple see minerally, leesy undertones of seashells and cheese rind, reminiscent of entry-level Chablis. Refreshing citrus and savory notes again lead on the bright, acid-driven palate, leading to a clean, mouth-tingling finish.
Food pairing: Drinking at a temperature of 10-12°C is excellent as an aperitif and goes well with fish appetizers.
The Domain: Falesco, now known as Famiglia Cotarella, was founded in 1979 in Montefiascone, Lazio, by brothers Renzo and Riccardo Cotarella1. Their goal was to rejuvenate the region's native grape varieties. Over the years, they have produced some remarkable wines, including the well-known Vitiano.
The winery’s Le Pòggere label is particularly famous for its Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone wine. The name of this wine has an interesting story: it is said to have originated from a German bishop, Johann Fugger, who traveled to Rome. He would send a servant ahead to mark the doors of inns serving good wine with an ‘Est!’ (Latin for “It is”). When the servant found an exceptional wine in Montefiascone, he marked the door with 'Est! Est!! Est!!!'.
Today, the winery is managed by the next generation of the Cotarella family, who continue to honor their heritage while innovating and producing high-quality wines.
