Localization: Santa Barbara, California, USA
Tasting Notes: The 2021 Santa Barbara Chardonnay has aromas of lemon, citrus blossom, and wet sand. On the palate, saline, and white peach. It is precise and balanced.
96 Points Vinous: “($30) The 2020 Chardonnay (Santa Barbara County) is outrageously beautiful. In fact, it is one of the very finest wines I have ever tasted from Greg Brewer. Rich and textured in the glass, with plenty of bright acids, 2020 is wonderfully alive. Greg Brewer has done a tremendous job in crafting a Chardonnay that is both texturally deep and intense. In 2020, facing a lack of visibility in the market because of COVID-19, Brewer-Clifton bottled just a fraction of their appellation Chardonnay, freeing up a number of top sites that Greg Brewer was able to access for Diatom. 2020 is simply magnificent. Drink: 2022-2029
The Domain: Diatom specializes in only one variety—Chardonnay— and is motivated by the pursuit of subtraction and refinement. Fermented at low temperatures in small stainless-steel tanks, coupled with inhibited malolactic fermentation and short hose transportation, diatom intends to capture Chardonnay in its most raw, carnal state. Winemaker Greg Brewer strives to imbue recognition of place with as little disturbance, distraction or interference as possible. The resulting wines have a sense of transparency and a purity of intent and purpose.
“The name diatom is inspired by the fossilized plankton (diatomaceous earth) which is replete in our appellation and is mined in Lompoc. Just as the pursuit is the ultimate in the purity of Chardonnay expression, the name itself needed to also be deliberate, certain, and true.” – Winemaker, Greg Brewer
