Alcohol: 14.5%
Grape(s): Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng
Localization: Southwest, France
Tasting Notes: Like most dry Jurançon, made predominantly from the two Manseng varieties, this is a rich wine. Spice and acidity are set around ripe white fruits, lightly peppery and with a touch of honey. Drink this dry wine from later this year.
Food pairing: Pair with Comté or Gruyère, which have nutty and savory flavors, or duck, especially if seasoned with fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary, which pair nicely with the wine’s subtle richness.
The Domain: Lionel Osmin & Cie, and its Clos de la Vierge label, was founded by Lionel Osmin and a group of wine enthusiasts passionate about the South-West region of France. Their aim was to highlight the unique grape varieties and terroirs of this often-overlooked region, much like how other regions like Burgundy and the Rhone had quality wine merchants. The winery focuses on producing quality wines from Jurançon, Cahors, Gaillac, Bergerac, and Marcillac.
The Barrère family created the estate in the 1940s. Today, they own parcels in three large terroirs: Clos Cancaillaü, Clos de la Virginie, and Domaine Lahitte. Anne-Marie Barrère is in charge, with the support of her sister Christiane. The wines produced are timeless and combine freshness, depth, and personality.
A statue of the Virgin Mary dominates the plot: she watches over this beautiful hillside, planted with vines over 50 years old.
