Tasting Notes: Dr. Loosen’s Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese opens with exotic aromas of passion fruit, mangosteen, and wild strawberry, lifted by herbal and mineral freshness. On the palate, juicy stone and berry fruit notes of tangerine, peach, and red currant create a vibrant core, while a dynamic interplay between minerality and fruit adds tension and complexity. Subtle herbal tones of deadnettle, tansy, and yarrow weave in savory depth, leading to a long, energetic finish marked by brisk acidity and spice. Lush yet balanced, medium-bodied, and richly textured, the wine carries an electric, spicy tingle from the vineyard’s iron-rich red soils, making it a distinctive and expressive Mosel Riesling.
Food pairing: It is wonderfully versatile at the table, making it an ideal partner for a wide range of dishes. Its lively acidity and gentle sweetness balance the heat of spicy Asian cuisine such as Thai or Sichuan, while its richness complements bold cheeses like blue or aged gouda. The wine’s vibrant fruit and brisk acidity also cut beautifully through the richness of pork belly, duck, or foie gras, creating harmony between savory depth and refreshing lift. Finally, its exotic fruit character makes it a natural match for fruit-based desserts like apple tart or peach cobbler, where it enhances sweetness without overwhelming the palate.
The Domain: The Loosen family has been growing Riesling and producing wine in the Mosel valley for over 200 years. The current owner, Ernst “Erni” Loosen, assumed ownership in 1988, embarking on a quest to greatly improve the quality and international reputation of the estate, the Mosel region, and Riesling in general. Today, Erni is one of the most iconic and influential winemakers in the world. A full range of Riesling styles is produced, following the traditions of both family lines: dry wines from the paternal Loosen side, and Prädikat wines inspired by the maternal branch (the Prüm family). Steep slopes of the Middle Moselle.
