Tasting notes: A dry Riesling made from grapes grown on red slate. Clemens Busch is a winemaker who desires to express terroir in its purest form; he eschews the use of sulfur and doesn't fine or filter, with the result that his wines have beautiful richness and texture. In the glass, the Riesling from Clemens Busch's red slate offers a brilliantly shimmering light yellow colour. This varietal German wine shows wonderfully expressive notes of grapefruit, lemon, lime and pink grapefruit in the glass. In addition, there are hints of forest soil and sunny rock

The Domain: Clemens Busch is a rock star in the Mosel (more Bob Dylan than Mick Jagger). After taking over his family's winery in 1984, he became one of the first winemakers in the region to practice biodynamics, and his wines have gained a devoted following ever since. His Marienburg vineyard, a steep slope above the Mosel River, is one of the best sites in the region and has 3 types of slate: blue, red and gray. A true "terroiriste" he vinifies each parcel separately and keeps a hands-off approach in the winery. The vom roten Schiefer is from red slate (note the red capsule on the bottle) and lends the wine some spice. Although it's bone dry, the wine is rich with flavors of ripe orchard fruits, citrus, and camomille. A bright streak of acidity keeps the wine light on its feet. Lush and lithe at the same time? That's the artistry of Clemens Busch
