Alcohol: 13.6%
Grape(s): 100% Gewurztraminer
Localization: Alsace, France
Tasting Notes: Elegant notes of citrus fruits such as orange and grapefruit, complemented by savory aromas of rosemary, thyme, and galangal. Lively and fresh with a salty note, delicate sweetness and silky tannins. A harmonious interplay of freshness and minerality.
Notes: The Clos Windsbuhl is located on the top of the village of Hunawihr, enjoying a beautiful view over the Alsace valley floor and the famous church Saint-Jacques le Majeur. Its position close to the Vosges forest at an altitude of 300/350m makes this vineyard relatively late ripening, even though its face turns from east to south on a steep slope. The little ‘windy hill’ lies on top of an old limestone rock, ‘Muschelkalk’, from the Trias period. With little topsoil, the vines aren’t very vigorous and are strongly influenced by the magnesium-rich calcareous mother rock, and so are the wines! Gewurztraminer may seem to be a challenge in such a location, but being able to harvest them quite late every vintage, the wines are always harmoniously balanced and carry a certain sweetness extremely well.
Food Pairing: Versatile white wine with refreshing acidity and length to enhance grilled or roasted root vegetables, sushi, sauteed chicken, or composed salads.
The Domain: The Domaine Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by the merging of two families, that on Zenon Humbrecht, viticulteur in Gueberschwihr, and that of Emile Zind, viticulteur in Wintzenheim, with the marriage of their children, Leonard Humbrecht and Ginette Zind. Before this date both families produced and sold their wines separately. Domaine Humbrecht had been passed from father to son since the Thirty Years War (1620). The vinification is now in the hands of Oliver Humbrecht, son of Ginette and Leonard. In 1995, Robert Parker called Oliver's 1993's "The wine of a genius".
