Alcohol:  14%

Grape(s): 100% Sangiovese

Location: Tuscany, Italy

Tasting Notes: A ripe but composed Brunello di Montalcino with tar, leather, dried brambleberries, dried tea leaves and ash. Chewy and foursquare on the full-bodied palate; the rustic tannins give this a silty, grainy quality. Decadent and powerful.

Food Pairing:

Notes: Alcoholic fermentation was done in tank, maloactic fermentation in oak barrels. Wine was then aged for 3 years in French oak barrels.

The Domain: The Poggio Nardone estate borders the Mocali estate. Tiziano and Alessandra Ciacci founded Poggio Nardone in 1996. They were inspired by Alessandra’s grandfather’s manuscripts, which detailed the original boundaries of what was once a larger Montalcino vineyard. They restored the property, using the manuscripts to guide the best planting sites.

Poggio Nardone is situated in both the southwest of Montalcino and the area of Montiano, near the coast of the Maremma Toscana. Wine has been produced in this area for over 500 years. They have almost 10 hectares of vineyards planted to Sangiovese: half in Montalcino, at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level with marl and limestone soil (rich in mineral salts); half in the Maremma area, at an altitude of 220 meters above sea level, on a plot of land formed primarily of sandstone and quartz reefs.

Tiziano is the winemaker, whose philosophy is to create wines that can be enjoyed young. He believes wines should have plenty of expression without have to cellar for many years. He achieves this by careful selection of vineyard sites, strict pruning, long maturation and low yield.
