The Domain: Domaine Saint Damien has a rich history rooted in the Southern Rhône Valley, France. The Saurel family has been farming vineyards in the region since 1821, but the estate as it exists today was officially established in 1979.
The winery was named Saint Damien in honor of a chapel that once stood near the estate’s cellars. Over time, the family expanded their vineyard holdings, modernized their winemaking facilities, and transitioned to organic farming, achieving certification in 2012.
Today, Domaine Saint Damien spans 45 hectares, with 15 hectares in Gigondas, where they craft some of the region’s most elegant wines. Their vineyards also include plots in Plan de Dieu and Côtes-du-Rhône, producing wines that reflect the terroir-driven philosophy of the estate.
The winemaking is led by Romain Saurel, who took over from his father, Joël Saurel, after completing his studies in oenology. The estate is known for its traditional vinification methods, including long maceration periods and aging in large old foudres, which help preserve freshness and complexity in their wines
