What is it? The 2016 Tolaini "Al Passo" Toscana is a barrel-aged Super Tuscan blend, about a third each of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot grown in Tuscany’s prestigious Chianti Classico region. Prized by critics, it’s earned ratings up to 95 points. ABV is 14.5%.
What does it taste like? Deep and textured, this Super Tuscan red has complex aromas of violets, cherries, berries, spices, and subtle oak. The dense and concentrated palate shows the sunny red berry fruit of sangiovese up front, along with the deeper darker black fruit of the Bordeaux varieties on the back palate. Round and full in texture, the palate leads to a long, complex and structured finish. Pair it with robust meals like lamb stew or a grilled steak.
Is it right for you? Don’t miss this if you enjoy full-bodied Tuscan reds. From Tuscany’s spectacular 2016 vintage, this barrel-aged red will also appeal to fans of Bordeaux and even new-world Cabernet. If there’s a more exciting Tuscan wine deal, I want to know about
Is it ready to drink? The 2016 Al Passo is drinking wonderfully today. It’s delicious on opening; then it expands, layer after layer, as it airs in the glass. With good storage, it will continue to evolve favorably until it’s a decade old.
