The County Chardonnay takes from the best Santa Barbara County has to offer blending grapes from five different vineyards. Using fruit from five, unique vineyard sites gives winemaker, Bruce McGuire, the flexibility to produce consistent and high-quality Chardonnay year after year. This wine benefits from the balance of grapes from the cooler climate of Los Alamos, with 60% percent of the grapes coming from the Alamos Vineyard, and grapes coming from the warmer climate further up Santa Ynez Valley.
All the grapes were pressed as whole clusters with 53% of the wine fermented in stainless steel tanks. The remaining 47% was barrel fermented and underwent malolactic fermentation. The barrelled wine was aged 'sur lie' and its lees were regularly stirred to impart flavor and complexity.
The result is a wine that is bright and flavorful with a great deal of fruit intensity. We consider this our trademark Chardonnay, a wine we have consistently produced year after year.
Winemaker Comments: Picked over an almost 4 week span from all parts of Santa Barbara County, this is a true County blend complexed with barrel fermented component to add richness and texture to the bright stainless steel fermented wine.
Tasting Notes: The 2019 Santa Barbara County Chardonnay is pale gold. Aromas of baked apple, faint pineapple and subtle baking spices fill the glass. Smooth flavors of Grannysmith apple and Asian pear coat the tongue. This Chardonnay stays bright with just the right touch of butteriness. Drink with creamy vegetable soups, lobster or prawns, and creamy brie style cheeses.
