Tasting Notes: The Meursault Les Grands Charrons is raised half in demi-muids and half in traditional Burgundy barrels with around 20% new oak. This is a little resinous on the nose, touches of beeswax and honeysuckle, needing a little coaxing from the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, taut and fresh, just the right amount of bitterness with stem ginger towards the spicy finish. Lovely.

The Domain: Domaine Michel Bouzereau et Fils is a producer based in Meursault in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. The Bouzereau family have been making wine in this region for seven generations, but it wasn't until 1971 that the domaine was officially established. Today, it comprises 11 hectares (27 acres) of vineyards divided between the appellations of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay, Pommard and Beaune.

Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau inherited the domaine from his father Michel in 1999. Since then, he has implemented a series of changes to the winemaking processes previously instigated by his father, including a reduction in battonage.

The Domaine Michel Bouzereau et Fils portfolio centers predominantly on Chardonnay, with a smaller selection of Pinot Noir. The top wines are a collection of six premier crus made from parcels of Genevrières, Blagny, Perrières and Charmes in Meursault, Le Cailleret and Champ Gain in Puligny-Montrachet, as well as Les Aussy in Volnay and Les Vignes Franches in Beaune. The domaine also produces village-level wines from small plots of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines in Meursault and Pommard, in addition to Bourgogne Aligoté, Blanc and Rouge.

Known to offer a magical balance of smoothness and freshness, Meursault's quality is hard to rival. The village lies in the middle of Côte de Beaune, just south of Volnay. Meursault is said to mean “mouse’s jump” because in the past the plots producing Pinot Noir and those producing Chardonnay were no more than a mouse’s jump from one another. Today the village is almost exclusively Chardonnay. A tiny bit of Pinot Noir is produced here with the best coming from Les Santenots on its northern side near Volnay.

While there are no Grands Crus, Meursault’s numerous acclaimed Premiers Crus can compete with any other top-notch white Burgundy. Some to know are Les Perrières, Les Genevrières, Les Charmes, Le Poruzot, Les Bouchères and Les Gouttes d’Or.

Meursault produces outstanding village level wines as well. In general great Premiers Crus and even village level Meursault (Chardonnay) have enticing aromas of lime peel, tropical fruit, crushed rocks, spice and hazelnut. On the palate there is a wonderful balance of brightness and a seductive length with flavors of white peach, pineapple and citrus.
