Tasting Notes: This bright ruby-colored red has intense aromas of dark cherries, blackberry tarts, and blueberries alongside subtle earth and floral violet notes. The fresh and vibrant palate mirrors the nose and lingers. As it slowly stretches out, it coats the palate with ripe dry black fruits. A touch of oak adds subtle complexity and elegant texture. Fresh acidity and supple tannins frame the finish and suggest this gorgeous pinot will drink nicely over the next four to five years.

Food pairing: This beauty is a perfect partner for all kinds of meals, from grilled salmon to pork tenderloin medallions in a wine-reduction sauce. It would be a fabulous pick with a traditional Thanksgiving turkey feast, too. It’s so perfectly balanced, though, it’s a joy to drink even with no food at all.

The Domain: The fruit for Straight Shooter was hand-harvested from selected vineyards planted in sedimentary and volcanic soils in Willamette Valley’s sub-AVAs, Eola-Amity Hills and McMinnville.

The 2019 vintage was a defining vintage. The temperatures during the growing season were much cooler than normal so patience was key. Careful sorting and extensive fruit-dropping in the vineyard were necessary to ensure that the remaining fruit ripened to full maturity. The grapes were hand-sorted again once received into the winery to achieve optimal quality. With the cool conditions this year, the wines retain a wonderful acidity and great flavor development.

Winemaking

The fruit was 80% destemmed and underwent an indigenous ferment in stainless steel open-top tanks. The grapes were “infused” as whole berries and 20% as whole clusters at a moderate temperature, in an oxygen-rich environment until pressed. The wine then matured in French oak barrels for 12 months, 10% of which were new.

Felipe Ramirez is the winemaker.
