Tasting Notes: The Syrah Williamson-Dore Vineyard is straight-up terrific, with beautiful, Hermitage-like aromas and flavors of ground pepper, cured meats, new saddle leather, and crushed stone. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the cooler style of the vintage in its purity and ripe, silky tannins, has lots of darker fruit, and a great finish. It’s pure Syrah goodness.

96 points - Vinous: A stunning wine, the 2018 Syrah Williamson-Doré Vineyard soars out of the glass with remarkable intensity in every dimension. Powerful, muscular tannins wrap around a core of inky dark fruit. Hints of lavender, licorice, leather and cloves develop later in this very young wine. The 2018 is 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier done with 10% whole clusters.

Notes: Hand-harvested; 10% whole cluster, 90% whole-berry destemmed into small, open-top fermenters with Viognier co-mingled

The Domain: Bill Wathen and Dick Dore have been making wine together since 1985 when they founded Foxen Winery & Vineyard at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in northern Santa Barbara County. Since that time, their dedication has remained the same - the creation of very small-production, sustainably-farmed, vineyard-focused wines using a "minimalist" approach to winemaking. Foxen is named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, an English sea captain, and Dick's great-great-grandfather, who came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800s and purchased the Rancho Tinaquaic. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive "anchor" as his cattle brand, which became the trademark of the winery. Foxen is at home on the history Rancho Tinaquaic with its solar-powered winery, tasting room, and 7200 "shack."
