Alcohol: 12.5%

Grape(s): Teroldego

Localization: Trentino, Italy

Tasting Notes: Teroldego Sgarzon is remarkably pretty and finessed with crushed strawberries, roses and sweet smoke. This is silky and pliant with a cool-toned feel, complemented by lifting acidity and ripe mineral-tinged red berries. It leaves the palate watering for more, yet with a subtle tug of fine tannins and lingering sour cherry fruits.

Notes: Local dialect for "vine shoot", "Sgarzon" is a cooler, sandier 2.5 hectares within the whole Foradori vineyard around the winery on the Campo Rotaliano plateau in the foothills of the Dolomites.

95 Points - James Suckling: Incredibly vibrant wild-berry, wild-herb and savory aromas pour from the glass of this dangerously expressive teroldego red that has so much energy, it’s hard to understand how it stays in the glass. The mineral acidity and fine-grained tannins are beautifully interwoven on the very long, diamond-bright finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold."

The Domain: Elisabetta planted the vines in guyot from massale cuttings in 1984. The farming is certified-biodynamic and the harvest is by hand. The bunches are destemmed, with the grapes going directly into clay amphorae (tinajas from J. Padilla in Spain) for an open-top, spontaneous fermentation without sulfur; the vessels are then closed for 6-8 months of maceration. The wine is bottled without fining or flitering and with its only small dose of sulfur. Sgarzon and its identically made companion wine, Morei (from a warmer, stonier site nearby) develop more quickly in clay than the foudre-aged Foradori and Granato and are thus released earlier.
