Artist Sandro Chia and his son Filippo run Castello di Romitorio and grew the fruit on some of their younger vines. Carlo Ferrini directed the winemaking at Romitorio’s beautiful winery. He’s one of Tuscany’s most revered winemakers with credits like Casanova di Neri, Castello di Brolio, Brancaia, Fonterutoli, Poliziano, Sette Ponti, and more. Ferrini barrel-aged this for over two years, mostly larger Slavonian oak barrels along with mid-sized French oak tonneaux. Before release, it aged at least six months in the bottle.
This Brunello has deep ruby color and gorgeous perfumed aromas of Morello cherries, blackberries, violets, sweet piney sage, and subtle oak. The structured palate starts out tight but unfolds with 30 minutes in a decanter to show cherries and berries deeply wrapped in earthy minerals and sweet spices. The long finish has power, along with a sense of freshness and elegance. Enjoy it now through 2030 with a grilled steak or robust stew.
