93pts Wine Advocate
"The certified-organic 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Elixir des Papes is 100% Grenache from the Coudoulet lieu-dit. Loaded with attractive notions of garrigue on the nose, those scents of thyme, lavender and rosemary are backed by black cherries on the full-bodied palate.
Broad and expansive in the mouth, with supple—almost creamy—tannins, the wine adds mentholated hints of dark chocolate on the long finish. The juxtaposition of herbal elements and ripeness make for an intriguing, complex wine worth coming back to.
It’s full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a long finish and building tannins. Give it two to three years and drink it over the next decade."
VARIETAL COMPOSITION: 100% Grenache Noir.
TERROIR: The estate is situated on the diluvium alpine soil, more specifically on the left side of the Rhone between Orange and Avignon in the renowned “terroirs” of Coudoulet and Chapouin. Domaine Berthet-Rayne wines draw their strength and richness from stone covered clayey-chalky soils.
VINIFICATION: The vinification process benefits from the use of a modern equipment : a light pressing and destalking for certain vintages ; with fermentation carried out at automatically regulated temperatures – all give our wines a more delicate and fruity flavour and allow them to age well.
