Tasting Notes: Lots of caramelized fruit here, such as toffee apples and apricot-flavored creme brulee. The palate is soft and supple with a perceptible touch of sweetness.
Notes: The 2017er Pündericher Marienburg Falkenlay GG was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks with fruit harvested in a grey-slate-infused part of the Marienburg vineyard. It delivers a complex and creamy nose of yellow peach, almond cream, freshly cut herbs, as well as a hint of tangerine and gingerbread. The wine starts off on the round and charming side on the delicately juicy and creamy palate. It is only in the finish that it really reveals its intense presence. Some saline and spicy elements in the after-taste add extra depth to this gorgeously ripe expression of Riesling. This could easily exceed our high expectations if further gains in finesse with aging.
96 Points - Wine Advocate: The 2017 Pündericher Marienburg Riesling GG Falkenlay is pure but generously ripe and bright with matured and super matured apple aromas that are perfectly intertwined with notes of crushed or even milled stones. Full-bodied intense and generous on the palate this is a rich and powerful but silky-textured and highly refined Riesling with lots of extract and intensity but also elegance. The finish is dense and compact with fine tannins intermingled with refreshing minerals that give grip and tension. This is a great GG and most likely the finest I have tasted from Clemens Busch in 20 years. Tasted in March 2019.
Food Pairing: Pairs well with white fish
The Domain: The winery is located in the town of Punderich, a small picturesque village at the beginning of the Terassenmosel. In 1984 the owners decided to convert to organic viniculture. In practice, that means time-intensive and often difficult work by hand on the steep slopes, along with the avoidance - without compromise - of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers. Nature returns the favor with healthy soil and vital, deep-rooted vines.
Our ultimate goal is to produce wines of the highest quality and individuality. We aim to achieve this through respectful interaction with the environment. Conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity is, for us, the essential function. To protect the vine we use various teas and herbal mixtures. Nettles strengthen the immune system and carry basic elements. Silicon-rich horsetail grass contains roll-off effects. Chamomile soothes stress. As protection against fungus, we use copper and sulfur which are supported by herbal mixtures that function as herbicides.
We care for our vines primarily by hand, with dedication and expertise, under the optimal exploitation of wind, rain, and sun.
